Kier has said all positions at its residential arm are at risk of redundancy.

The firm is planning to cut its residential division structure to just one office and administration unit at its head office in Bedfordshire.

This week Kier said it was closing offices at St Neots in Cambridgeshire, Borehamwood in Hertfordshire and Glasgow. In May it said it was shutting two offices in Lincolnshire.

A spokeswoman said staff numbers at the division would be cut by 60 per cent to 250.

She added: "The steep and continuing downturn in the housing market has been such that Kier believes this is necessary to ensure a residential business for the future."

Chief executive John Dodds has said this business is being hit by negative market sentiment. But he has complained his business is too readily labelled a house builder and that its construction and support services are the biggest contributors to profits.
