Taylor Wimpey could net up to £100 million if it sold its Taylor Woodrow building arm.
The house builder, with debts of £1.9 billion, is carrying out a strategic review of its construction business which has picked up high-profile contracts in recent weeks on the London Underground and at King's Cross station in north London.
One City analyst said: "It's a got a good reputation and they could get £100 million for it. But everyone knows Taylor Wimpey has problems so wouldn't be able to name its price."
Firms mentioned in connection with a bid include Laing O'Rourke but a spokesman declined to comment.
