Tinsley towers to be demolished

Power giant E.ON has announced it will bring down the remaining Tinsley cooling towers in Sheffield over the August Bank Holiday to make way for a biomass power plant.

The 250ft towers will be demolished in a controlled explosion in the early hours of Sunday 24th August as the M1 motorway has to be closed between junctions 32 and 35.

The A631 Tinsley viaduct lower deck between the Tinsley and Meadowhall roundabouts will also be closed

E.ON was granted planning permission to develop a biomass power station by Sheffield City Council earlier this year.

The plant is expected produce enough renewable energy to serve the needs of around 40,000 homes.
