Yorkshire & Humber carpenters cheaper

The daily rate for carpenters is the only cost that is cheaper for construction firms in Yorkshire and Humber compared to the UK rate, according to the EC Harris/Construction News Contractor's Input Cost Index for September.

At £165 per day compared to the mean UK average of £169, carpenters are cheaper than bricklayers which cost £170 per day compared to the national rate of £172.

Ready mix concrete costs more than £79 per cubic metre compared to the mean national rate of £72 per cubic metre while steel reinforcement costs £9 more at £752 per tonne.

Structural steel costs £1,628 per tonne compared to £1,621 per tonne UK-wide while both concrete blocks and timber cost more at £7.73 per sq metre and £2.96 per metre respectively.

For the year to September 2008 the top three contractors in Yorkshire have picked up 40 contracts worth a total of more than £796 million.

Those firms are Interserve which picked up 13 contracts worth £407.4 million while Morgan Sindall scooped 16 worth more than £202.7 million. Bam Construct was awarded 11 worth a total of £187.8 million
