F-Gas Works gets the debate rolling
EIA and Eurammon attack HFCs’ efficiency but F-Gas champion holds firm
RAC’s F-Gas Works campaign has triggered debate among senior industry leaders on the early phase-out of HFCs following calls by the Environmental Investigation Agency for an immediate ban.
The Environmental Investigation Agency and Eurammon, the European initiative for natural refrigerants, both predictably spoke against HFCs claiming they are inefficient and harmful to the atmosphere.
The EIA’s global environment campaign co-ordinator Fionnuala Walravens told sister title H&V news that a phase-out is ‘essential’ as an example to the developing world and that moves by the rac community to contain the gas ‘don’t work in reality’.
In a separate statement, Eurammon’s chairperson Monica Witt disputed the view that HFCs are an energy efficient refrigerant.
But F-gas champion Graeme Fox of the European contractors’ association AREA dismissed both bodies’ claims by saying the efficiency of refrigerant is dependant on application.
“It horses for courses,” he said. “In some cases applications ammonia is the most efficient refrigerant, but in others it will be HFCs.”

The F-Gas Works campaign is a chance for the industry to make its feelings known on HFCs, says RAC editor Andrew Gaved.
“Many in the rac industry think the time has come for action, that we must prove to the policy makers that HFCs are still essential to our industry,” he says.
“The first step is to galvanise industry support and raise awareness, so RAC has launched its F-Gas Works campaign – so-called for the double belief that F-Gases remain essential working refrigerants and that the F-Gas legislation, given time, will prove the industry’s ability to contain leakage.”
