Environmental groups welcome chance to debate HFCs at Bonn Climate Change Talks

Meeting suggests a ‘phase-down’ of HFCs as part of a four year programme of emissions reduction, based on refrigerant use levels

Environmental groups are celebrating the fact that HFCs will be on the agenda at the UN climate talks, currently taking place in Bonn, Germany.

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) said that this is a significant step for supporters of an HFC phase out, since the talks will focus on the UN climate agreement after 2012.

The EIA said the meeting is proposing a ‘phase-down’ of HFCs as part of a four year programme of rapid emissions reduction, based on refrigerant use levels, rather than emissions.

The Agency said that such a programme would be the most cost effective and rapid way of reducing ‘escalating HFC emissions’, and would build on the success of the legislation to reduce Ozone Depleting Substances.
