Waitrose to install hydrocarbon refrigeration equipment

Waitrose has declared it will be the first supermarket to install hydrocarbon refrigeration equipment as its HFC-free solution for its new stores and major refits.

The propane based equipment will cut its carbon footprint by 20 per cent and equally significantly the HC technology will be simple to install, and easily serviced by retrained engineers the supermarket said.

It promised to invest in additional training to allow speedy roll-out.

At the same time, the supermarket has announced it will halve its refrigerant leaks over the next three years and to ‘report publicly on progress’

Nigel Keen, Director of Building and Services and Development said: “Reduction of HFCs is a major concern for supermarkets and the beauty of this system is its simplicity  - there are no barriers to it being rolled out.

Waitrose has also committed to a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating on all new stores, the first supermarket to do so.
