M&S sets bold targets
Marks and Spencer has unveiled new refrigeration targets as part of the next phase of its Plan A environmental policy.
The retailer has set itself the target of halving its carbon footprint by 2015, by a combination of new carbon-dioxide systems, conversion to lower GWP refrigerants and a significant reduction in refrigerant leakage.
M&S committed to removing HFCs from all its refrigeration and air conditioning by 2030 and underlined its intention to install CO2 systems at all its new stores.
As an interim emission cutting measure, the firm is replacing systems currently using R404A with lower-GWP R407A. It will have achieved the conversion on 100 stores by March, and aims to convert all remaining stores over the next five years.
A further key part of its strategy is a programme now underway to halve leakage across the existing estate. M&S will be talking about what this means for the supply chain at RAC’s Retail Question Time on 25 February.
