Wates dazzles at the CN Awards
On Tuesday evening the great and the good of the construction world dusted off their dinner suits and dresses to gather for the annual Construction News Awards 2011. In a night of celebrations that saw several new awards and three company heads honoured for their contribution to the industry, Wates Group stood out winning three top awards.
The company won the judges’ supreme award, Contractor of the Year as well as Employer of the Year. Chief executive and chairman Paul Drechsler was also honoured with a place on the new Construction Leaders Roll of Honour. Among the many qualities the company possesses, the judges were particularly impressed by Wates’ commitment to its staff, efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and the clear strategy for continued growth and development in evidence at the company.
Costain chief executive Andrew Wyllie and Vinci chairman and chief executive John Stanion made up the trio to be inaugurated into the Construction News Role of Honour alongside Mr Drechsler.
Costain also triumphed in one of the new awards, Best Use of Technology, which it won for its enterprise deployment of Primavera P6. Imtech scooped the prize for Environmental Project with its Cardiff and Afan Advanced Digestions plants, while BAM Nuttall’s Beyond Zero campaign won the Health & Safety award.
In another of the new awards, Kenny Macfarlane, business unit manager at Clive Durose Woodturners, was named Rising Star of the Year. At only 24 Kenny has set up, developed and managed a business unit for CDW and the judges were convinced he would rise quickly in the industry.
The retrofit award went to East Thames Group for its work on the Greener Homes for Redbridge project, which attempted to reduce the carbon footprint of 20 vacant older houses through refurbishment. Lakehouse won this year’s award for Training thanks to the high level of mobility in evidence at the company.
The three project awards recognise outstanding projects under to £10 million, between £10-50 million and over £50 million and this year went to BAM Nuttall, GB Building Solutions and Interlink M74 JV respectively. Franlkin + Andrews collected the award for QS firm of the year due to its work to develop its staff, encourage sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint.
Product Innovation, Tomorrow’s Company and Specialist Contractor all went to Lakesmere, and Warings took home the prize for sustainability. For profiles and interviews with the winners, read the awards special in the 21st July issue of CN.
