Overall the value of projects starting on site during January to July was 4 per cent up on a year earlier.
The rise was driven by an increase in infrastructure work and a strong initial start to the year for the private housing sector, which accounts for over a third of all work tracked by Glenigan in the region.
But the flow of new housing projects securing planning approval has slowed as house builders have reined in their development programmes. This contributed to a slowing in private housing project starts as the year has progressed.
Indeed, during the first seven months the value of projects reaching planning approval in the region was markedly lower for every sector except social housing. This will constrain the flow of projects starting on site during the closing months of this year, with a further weakening in projects starts anticipated for 2009.
