Downturn online: SCOTLAND

In Scotland retail work has been significantly hit. For the year to the end of July 2008 starts have been valued at £95 million which compares to £240 million for the whole of 2007.

That contrasts with the value new work started in medical and scientific work which Glenigan values at £207 million compared to £177 million in 2007.

Housing across the board has held up in Scotland. Private housing starts are valued at £896 million while social housing stands at £187 million. That compares respectively to £1,286 million and £411 million.

The value of industrial work has held off at £129 million for the first seven months of this year compared to last year when the value was £199 million.

Offices and commercial work is another successful sector. Glenigan puts the value of that work at £388 million so far this year, which compares to £387 million last year.

Another loser was hotel and leisure work which is suffering. The value of work stands at £91 million with just five months left this year to hit last years total of £354 million.

The value of amenity work for this year stands at £31 million, which compares to £140 for 2007.
