06Sep91 UK: LONDON BRICK IS TO SHUT CALVERT WORKS IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE AND AXE 372 JOBS.

London Brick, Britain's biggest brickmaker, is to close another works and axe 372 jobs as demand refuses to pick up and stock remains at a high level. This latest round of redundancies will bring to nearly 2,000 the number of jobs lost at the company since spring 1989. The company's workforce has roughly halved. The Calvert works in Buckinghamshire will be closed with the loss of 336 jobs, while 36 jobs will go in the delivery fleet at the Stewartby depot in Bedfordshire.London Brick has taken the brunt of the redundancies in the brick industry, though most brickmakers have had to make deep cuts in their workforces as a result of the recession.Production of bricks peaked in Britain in the second quarter of 1989 as a result of massive investment. Since then it has been cut back by nearly one-third, but only in the past few months has production dropped below deliveries and stocks fallen.Brick stocks rose sharply from 204 million in the summer of 1988 to nearly 1,500 million at the start of this year. The number of bricks stockpiled now would keep the industry supplied for nearly six months.
