Kentish men protest over being excluded by outsiders

NEWS

THERMAL insulation engineers protested outside a power plant in Kent last Thursday over local workers missing out on jobs and poor on-site conditions, writes Andrew Hankinson.

Around 200 members of the GMB demonstrated outside the Allington Energy From Waste Plant in Maidstone.

Protesters are angry that local engineers are unemployed while labour is drafted in from outside the region. The men are also unhappy with welfare facilities and foreign workers being employed outside the Blue Book agreement.

A spokesman for the German owned main contractor Lurgi UK said: 'We are disappointed that this unofficial action was taken. The site is operating under the Blue Book agreement and we have maintained dialogue with the unions.'
