Retirement stamp cash goes begging

CONSTRUCTION'S holiday and benefits scheme, B&CE, is still sitting on £1.1 million in unclaimed money for retired builders.

Former workers who were in the holiday stamp scheme after 1982 could be eligible for a lump sum payment of up to £5,000.

Holiday stamps are bought by employers on behalf of their directly employed workforce but many builders do not realise they can claim cash when they retire.

Retired Birmingham pipelayer Jimmy Gaffney picked his cheque up from B&CE general manager Bob Veal last week.

Mr Gaffney worked for Laing Midlands, Roberts and Tarmac in the 1980s before retiring through ill health. He is now 65 and eligible for the cash.

Retired building workers who think they may be able to claim can phone B&CE on 0345 414142.
