UK contractors lobby new government ministers

Exclusive: The UK Contractors Group has written an open letter to new government ministers, highlighting the construction industry’s ability to boost the economy and requesting five urgent actions to help it do so.

The letter, published by Construction News, highlights the UKCG’s Creating Britain’s Future campaign, supported by CN, which seeks to promote the construction industry and its capability to deliver economic growth.

The letter, which is addressed to ministers across a number of government departments, calls for them to:

  • Move forward the implementation of the UK Guarantees Scheme and working with the construction industry to boost infrastructure and housing to bring forward the pipeline of projects published with the last Autumn statement;
  • Provide early signals on the level of public investment and the construction pipeline in the next CSR period;
  • Make an early announcement on the future of the Private Finance Initiative;
  • Provide clarity over the future direction of policy on the expansion of airport capacity in London and the South-east to ensure the UK is positioned for economic growth and investment, and
  • Continue to work with the industry to help create more apprenticeship opportunities within the industry.

The letter has been sent to senior ministers including business secretary Vince Cable and education secretary Michael Gove, as well as incoming ministers including Michael Fallon at the Department of Business, housing minister Mark Prisk, transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin and LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton, who will become the new commercial secretary to the Treasury.

Creating Britain’s Future

The campaign is supported by groups including the Civil Engineering Contractors Association; National Specialist Contractors’ Council; Federation of Master Builders; Home Builders Federation; RIBA; and the National Federation of Builders

It states: “As the government now moves to a fresh focus on implementation, we want you to know that the industry is here to support you as you make those briefs your own.”

The UKCG adds: “One lasting Olympic legacy must surely be the fact that a great client provided the industry with an opportunity to build a first class product on time and budget that is the envy of the world. It shows construction team GB can deliver gold. It is therefore brilliant news that LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton is to join the government to help drive investment in infrastructure.”

Central to the campaign is spreading the message that every £1 invested in construction generates £2.84 in economic activity and that 92p of every £1 invested in construction stays in the UK.
