SSE has £600m wind farm approved
Scottish and Southern Energy is looking for contractors to build its newly approved £600 million onshore wind farm in southern Scotland.
The energy supplier was granted consent by Scottish ministers to develop the 456MW capacity wind farm, known as Clyde, today.
Although construction is expected to begin later this financial year, a spokesman for SSE told Construction News the company had not decided on a contractor yet. It will be built in two stages.
Commissioning of the first stage of the 152-turbine project is expected in 2010 with completion of both stages scheduled for 2011.
When completed, this will be the largest onshore wind farm in Europe.
The company said Scottish companies would receive around £300 million for their part in developing the project and over 200 fulltime jobs would be created.
The company has held talks with the South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire in an effort to maximise local supplier involvement in the construction and ongoing maintenance of the wind farm.
SSE chief executive Ian Marchant said: “Clyde is clearly going to be a major project, with significant economic opportunities for the local community. Our priority is to satisfy the conditions relating to the consent.”
