WSP opens Libyan arm

Engineering consultancy WSP Group has established a company in Libya in partnership with a Government-run housing body.

Tripoli-based WSP Libya – which has been formed in partnership with the Libyan Government’s Housing & Infrastructure Board – will provide consultancy services to organisations involved in construction and infrastructure projects in the country.

The HIB – which has a budget of US$50m – has plans to build 250,000 new homes, as well as modernise large parts of Libya’s infrastructure, which was adversely affected by European Union and US sanctions.

WSP Libya, which employs 10 people, has signed a contract to work on the design of a 17km four-lane ring road around the city of Sabha in the southern part of the country. It is also in advanced negotiations regarding contracts relating to the planning of a 250-hectare city district in Tripoli.

WSP Libya managing director Markus Eek said: “We have made a very good start in our new operation and I have every intention of building on this – it is my hope that we, together with the Libyans, will be able to assist in further developing the country and establishing our company as Libya’s leading consultancy.”
