Caterpillar today revealed plans for a new factory to build small hydraulic excavators in China.

The facility will be based in Nanjing, Jiangsu province and will build excavators of less than 20 tonnes.

The company said it plans to build excavators for the domestic market.

The proposed facility will be located in a 150,000m2 site and Caterpillar intends to begin construction of the 36,500m2 factory manufacturing in early 2009 pending appropriate governmental approvals.

Caterpillar core products manufactured in China include: hydraulic excavators, track-type tractors, motor graders and paving products, wheel loaders, large diesel engines used primarily for marine and power generation applications, and generator sets for use in China and the Asia Pacific region.
