Supermarket plan gets green light

A major new supermarket in Wirral’s primary shopping centre has been given the green light following a public inquiry.

The Asda development planned for Grange Road, in Birkenhead, has already received planning permission from Wirral Council, but objections from one shop on the site forced an inquiry at Birkenhead Town Hall.

Retailer B&M had objected to the use of Compulsory Purchase Orders to buy out properties in order to clear part of Grange Road.

The 8,800 sq m supermarket, along with extra car parking, is being developed by Castlewood Developments and Pochin plc.

Preparatory work has already been undertaken on the scheme. However, objections to the project included whether it was a viable option for the area.

Following the probe, planning inspector Christina Downes ruled that the project should go forward.
