Saints stadium gets green light

Rugby super league giants St Helens got the go-ahead for a new stadium after the Government Office for the north-west decided against a public enquiry for the scheme.

House builder Taylor Wimpey, supermarket giant Tesco and developer Langtree were granted consent to turn the former United Glass site into a £25 million, 18,000 capacity stadium.

A Tesco Extra will also be built on the site.

The team will work with St Helens Council to agree a conservation management plan for the site, which is home to an ancient monument.

Site clearance is expected to start mid 2009 with work scheduled to finish in February 2011.
