Canterbury City Council has given the go-ahead for a £25.5 million redevelopment of the Marlowe Theatre.
The job will see the construction of a 1,200 seat auditorium and a second 150 seat performance space.
Funding comes from Canterbury City Council, the South East England Development Agency and Kent County Council.
The theatre will close early 2010 and is scheduled to reopen in 2011.
