A framework contract to refurbish the country's canals is up for grabs, with five firms battling it out for the work.
Kier, Nuttall, May Gurney, Balfour Beatty and Morrison – who is the incumbent firm on the job – are all believed to be bidding for the contract.
Work is set to start in April 2009 and the framework will last for four years, with the option for a one-year extension.
Worth at least £10 million a year, the deal from British Waterways will see the winning bidder improving canals from Scotland to the South-west of England.
A spokesman for British Waterways said the work would include repairing locks, repairing soft banks and building new hard banks.
