Govt to unveil plans for future direction energy infrastructure
Plans for fast-tracking a new fleet of nuclear reactors is to be announced by the Government today.
Energy secretary Ed Miliband will unveil national policy statements to be used for future decisions on infrastructure development, including a list of potential sites for new nuclear power stations.
The statements will be used by the newly-formed Infrastructure Planning Commission to decide where and when it is appropriate to construct new nuclear.
It is hoped the new guidelines will allow projects to come to the market more quickly, and avoid repeats of the six-year struggle to get Sizewell B through planning.
The Government will also unveil draft policy statements on other areas of energy infrastructure, including fossil fuels and renewables.
