Supermarket gets planning go-ahead
A new supermarket is to be built on the site of a council’s civic offices in Shropshire after it received planning permission.
Asda was granted full planning permission to construct a new 4,087 sq metre store, complete with a 500 space car park and a petrol filling station, at the location of Telford and Wrekin Council’s civic offices.
An objection by joint venture Hark Apollo had seen the decision deferred in December, but the construction work has now been given the go-ahead by the council’s planning board. The new store is due to replace an Asda located in Telford Shopping Centre.
The council also granted planning permission for 79 new homes to be built on the site next to the Asda store, which will be opened in 2014.
Asda property communications manager Chris Marlow said: “We are delighted with the decision and believe it reflects the views of the vast majority of Telford residents.”
